Director and screenwriter Alain Resnais (1922–2014) is one of the classics of French cinema. He was a key figure of the Left Bank group (Rive Gauche) which brought together with French New Wave new approaches to french filmmaking. His films explore memory, trauma, and the complex, overlapping nature of time. He is best known for his collaborations with writer Alain Robbe-Grillet on Hiroshima Mon Amour and the cult film Last Year at Marienbad. The Marienbad Film Festival pays tribute to Resnais every year by screening one of his films. In 2026, we have selected his lesser-known work Stavisky.
