Piotr Szulkin’s feature debut draws on motifs from Gustav Meyrink’s novel of the same name. A classic of Polish dystopian cinema, the film is a bleak science fiction set in a post-nuclear world, where society is divided between scientists who manufacture artificial humans and a population controlled by television. The protagonist is an artificial human, a homunculus, who makes a hopeless attempt at rebellion.
