Lecture of Vojtěcha Cibulky from organisation Neticho
Every seventh adult in Europe hears noise, ringing, buzzing, or humming in their ears. This disruption of the auditory system is called tinnitus. Tinnitus is the Latin term for ringing, buzzing, hissing, or humming in the ears. In the vast majority of cases, it is what's known as subjective tinnitus, which is heard only by the affected person.
Since 2023, the organization Neticho has been helping people with tinnitus by raising awareness, connecting patients, volunteers, doctors, and therapists interested in tinnitus treatment. One method of treating tinnitus is Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT), a therapeutic approach focused on breaking the connection between auditory and non-auditory centers in the brain (the limbic and autonomic nervous systems). The goal is to eliminate negative reactions associated with tinnitus.
As part of this method, sound therapy is used, exposing patients to an environment with background noise (such as music or mobile phone apps). It specifically employs a noise generator (most commonly using pink noise). In this stage, the goal is to reduce the sound contrast between the tinnitus and a quiet environment. The noise is used at an intensity lower than the tinnitus itself to reduce its subjective perception.
