The ceremonial opening of the Marienbad Film Festival at the Municipal Theatre in Mariánské Lázně is, as every year, an opportunity to thank all those who have been supporting the festival tirelessly over the years – our partners, friends, families, the city, the region, ministries, funds, and also our colleagues, without whom the festival could have ended more than once. In competition with larger, more established, wealthier, and more influential film festivals, running a festival focused on alternative, independent, and experimental cinema is always somewhat on the edge of existence and on the margins of public interest. Yet it is precisely the determination of the organizers of smaller, local cultural events, initiatives, and festivals that represents a hope for the future – a kind of avant-garde outpost that strives to understand local needs and to give back to the towns rather than take from them.
