COMEDOWN: Džian Baban

For the third time in a row, Marienbad Film is producing a music album by a significant contemporary Czech composer focused on film music. Following Petr Marek (and the group Unarclub) in 2023 and Aid Kid in 2024, it is now Džian Baban, who composes music for the award-winning and innovative films of visual artist Adéla Babanová. He also collaborates with other Czech filmmakers, including Ivana Milošević, Tereza Vejvodová, Zdeněk Durdil, and others. The film Butterfly Vision by Ukrainian director Maksym Nakonechnyi, for which Baban composed the score in 2022, was featured in the Un Certain Regard competition section at the Cannes Film Festival, the most prestigious film festival in the world. In addition to composing, he works as a sound designer, collaborating with institutions such as Czech Radio. The podcast drama Disappearance (Mizení)—directed by Bohdan Karásek, written by Matěj Samec, and produced by Klára Vičíková—is one of Czech Radio’s most listened-to podcasts and received a Special Jury Mention at the Bohemia Prix Radio competition in 2024.

Džian Baban is also a screenwriter, writing for film, theatre, and comics.
