Saturday 11:30
The Chopin House
2024, 7 min., English
Director: Lily Ford
Light Hands presents an encounter with archive film, an audiovisual moment from my research into the early history of aviation. It is also an exercise in appropriation, taking material produced in a patriarchal setting and curating it anew with a feminist agenda. Thirdly, it is an effort to think with film, using video, sounds, and time alongside text, to initiate an investigation.
Lily Ford is a historian and filmmaker based in London. She did her PhD on the history and visual culture of early aviation, and wrote Taking to the Air: An Illustrated History of Flight in 2018. Lily teaches history and filmmaking with the University of Pittsburgh’s London programme, as well as producing films with scholars and artists. She's interested in digital video as an academic output and has made two research films about women in aviation, Dear Ella (2020) and Aerial Bodies (2022).
