An unsanctioned observation of largest oil refinery in USA, processing 440,000 barrels of crude oil a day. By night, the complex becomes a heaving edifice of flame and fog. We observe its operation from afar as the inferno slowly engulfs the frame, accompanied by an original hypnotic soundscape by UK club experimentalist Loraine James. A vision of industrial desolation in which dread turns to awe.

Alexander Girav is an American filmmaker and cinematographer whose work explores post-capitalist landscapes through an experimental, ethnographic lens. His films have screened at Sundance, Rotterdam, Chicago, Edinburgh, Atlanta, and Jeonju International Film Festivals.

The Marienbad Film Festival is an international film festival focusing on works of an experimental nature, marginal forms of cinema, contemporary moving image, and artistic & challenging films. It creates an opportunity for independent and experimental filmmakers and artists using the moving image to meet, but also aims to make more challenging films accessible to a wider audience.
